Question:
I would love to hear some suggestions with my dilemma. I have a
smattering of light colored but very stubborn (and fairly bristly/thick)
facial hair which grows all around my chin/jawline. I am in my early
20s, female, and yet if I don't trim the hair, I look like I'm growing
whiskers. I tried the facial depilatory which was such a great idea,
but made my skin an absolute WRECK. So now I basically keep cutting the
hair every few days, but that doesn't get rid of it, it just makes it
less noticeable. I'm so sick of it I've considered shaving it, but my
mother said that would be a terrible idea. Any ideas? I'm so
frustrated and I feel like everytime someone comes close to me, it's all
they'll see.
Answer:
-Shaving is a great option. It is an old wives tale that it grows back
thicker - it DOESNT. When you shave your legs do you get really thick hair
back? No. Men also tend to age less quickly than women because they shave
their faces, which exfoliates the skin. So shaving the face is a good option
to remove hair and exfoliate. The only thing though, women shouldn't shave
more than once a month. -Do you have PCOS by any chance? That's a symptom a lot of women have.
As for removal options, shaving is harsh, waxing could work, laser is
expensive and deemed "hair reduction" by the FDA (I'm writing a story on
this stuff, so I've got lots of hair removal info in my brain at the
moment) and electrolysis works, though it can take a long time, and end
up expensive, depending on the growth cycle of the hair.
Whenever I get hairs like that I do electrolysis. Works best for me. But
its a very personal choice.
There is a new product on the market called Vaniqa (www.vaniqa.com) that
claims to reduce hair regrowth over time, provided you use it twice a
day, every day, for ever. You also have ot use it in conjunction with
some other sort of hair removal process.
Ask a dermatologist about getting a prescription. I think some insurance
companies mght not cover it, but I don't think its prohibitively
expensive.
