Question:
I had understood that laser hair removal was based on the contrast between dark hair and light skin and thus that it didn't work on pale-skinned people with blond or gray hair or on dark-skinned people. Now I'm seeing advertisements for places that say they can do the process on any skin and hair color. What gives?

Answer:
-i skimmed this story in the latest allure today! they mentioned a new type of laser that doesn't require such a contrast between hair and skin. yag? i think that might be the name. -From the May Allure (hope it's alright to quote): "Doctors have to select the best laser for each patient's hair and skin color carefully. In general, most lasers work on fair skin with dark hair, (...) Intense Pulsed Light, with is similar to a laser in some ways, is also considered by some doctors to deliver a less painful, more permanent form of hair removal. "It can be used on any shade of skin and hair color - except white hair," explains New York dermatologist Harvey Jay." Good info on hair removal.
